Squid in ink

£4.95

Squid in ink from Ati Manel, a Portuguese producer steeped in the country's canning traditions. The diced squid comes in a rich, savoury ink, onion and tomato sauce. Open this tin with some good bread to dunk in the sauce.

Ati Manel began a canning business that flourished during World War II when demand for canned fish took off. Relics from the brand - notebooks filled with recipes and contacts for producers and fishermen, silkscreen frames, lithographic stones - were discovered a few years ago in Manel's house by his great grandson Luís Mendonça. The graphic designer was captivated by what he found, and relaunched his great grandfather's brand, reworking the mid 20th Century designs and fostering the same close relationships as his great grandfather with the suppliers, fishermen and auctioneers at fish markets in order to create high quality conservas.
